Dennis Von Linden, a Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife member submitted 2 photos of a banded Piping Plover. The photos were taken at Bunche Beach that were taken “100 yards to the right of the beach’s entrance in the wrack line”. Sighting took place on 2/18/2012 at 8 am. ”

Dennis submitted the photos to the Army Corp of Engineers who answered his letter, and he also received a response from the woman who’s team from Virginia Tech that had done the banding. It appears these birds live on the Missouri river in South Dakota & winter here in SW Florida.

The email trail is quite interesting reading and of course reads from the latest email on the top and the original email last.

Hi Dennis,
Thanks so much for reporting this and for the great photos! The PIPL you observed was banded by Virginia Tech (green flag). It appears to be missing a band on the lower right leg. A PIPL with a red band above the dark blue band has been observed at Bunche Beach the last few winters so there is a good chance this is the same bird. If this is true, it was banded as an adult during the summer of 2009 on the Gavins Point Reach of the Missouri River, near Vermillion SD. Please let me know if you have any questions, thanks!

Below is a report and attached are pictures of one of your plovers seen down in Florida. There appears to be a band missing from the lower right leg as my scheme shows that there should be two bands on each lower leg. I hope you will still be able to identify the plover. The bands that were observed were… Left leg – 1 green flag on upper  /  2 green bands on lower Right leg – no bands seen on upper / 1 blue band on lower. I’ve enclosed some photos for confirmation.
